Thanks for visiting,

It’s been a long while since I’ve posted an update and quite a lot has changed in the past several months. I don’t normally share many personal details about myself online, but some seismic shifts are taking place in my life right now and I thought that I should let you in on it, because it means I’ve had to make a tough decision about Lighting by Sara.

My husband Spencer and I were both born and raised in California; he in San Diego and I, in the San Francisco Bay. We love this state, but some exciting opportunities have come along that will draw us away from the coast and into Arizona. While it breaks my heart to move so far from friends, family, and the place I’ve loved all my life, I’m thrilled for this chance to begin a new adventure; to discover a whole new landscape and fall in love with a wonderful new place and community.

In addition to this giant change, (and while moving out of state may have been enough to make me consider pausing my business while we resettle) we’ve recently been blessed with an even huger reason for me to take some time off. For several years now, we’ve been yearning to start a family, but like so many others, we’ve struggled with infertility. It’s been what seems like a very long journey for us, full of ups and downs. But at last, we’re finally expecting our first baby boy, due in March of 2021. My heart is fit to burst with gratitude and joy for our answered prayers. It’s overwhelming to discover how quickly things can change and I’m looking forward to taking some time off from my work to focus on myself and my growing family.

It’s been an incredible experience to build my business and connect with so many of you. When I started Lighting by Sara in 2015, I went into this adventure with no business experience and zero expectations, only hoping that someone out there would come across the things I crafted and enjoy them. I was genuinely shocked to make my first sale, overjoyed when I read my first review, and baffled by the flood of requests that hit my inbox to make more.

Since then, I’ve made roughly 3,500 night lights. There are 3,500 of my creations in this world, softly glowing in homes all over the globe. In my mind, I imagine them like tiny sparks in the dark, dotted all across the country and across the planet; each one a warm little wave from a friend who found meaning in something that I made with my own two hands. You found my work and fell in love and decided to treat yourself, or you bought it to warm up the nursery you’ve been decorating in preparation for a new addition to your family. Many of you came across my lamps and thought immediately of a loved one, a new grandbaby, niece or nephew, or a friend in need of a little light in their darkness. I can’t tell you how much that means to me.

I’m taking an indefinite break from Lighting by Sara, but I know for a fact that I will come back to it in the future. If there is anything I know about myself, it is that I will forever have a need and a drive to create, and that I will always have a thing for lamps. I may make different things for a while, but it is inevitable that I will eventually get the bright idea to put a light bulb inside them. Thank you for following my work and all of your support over the last five years. I hope to see you again when I return!

All the best,
Sara

PS.

I know many of you have been wondering where I’ve been and why the shop has been empty in recent weeks. I would have shared the news above with you all sooner, but in the midst of all this change, my dad, Todd passed suddenly. He has left a wake of heartbreak behind him. Some of you may have seen or heard me talk about him in the past. He was an electrician and in a lot of ways, the inspiration for the lamps I create. He was truly a light in the life of everyone that knew him and he continues to be a giant part of me and my work. There would have been no Lighting by Sara at all without him. Thank you all for your support and understanding for my lack of communication recently. I’m working on replying to emails and messages and will do my best to get back to everyone as soon as I can. 💛

I'm a lady with a passion for creating fun, functional art - particularly lamps and light fixtures.
The product of three generations of electricians, raised on Spirograph, Lincoln Logs, and tinkering with Dad at the workbench, I've developed a style that combines my intricate designs with some simple materials to make something that is beautiful and useful. Each and every night light in my shop is handmade, packaged, and shipped by me from my tiny home studio and garage workshop in Antioch, California.
